Journeying into Scoliosis Wellness

By Theresa Shay

At the end of September, a group of six TriYoga flow-ers met for the inaugural Scoliosis Wellness Journey led by Theresa. Four participated in person at the new space built for TriYoga® near Theresa's home in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania. The online satellite group signed on from Rochester, New York.

Students spent the weekend understanding scoliosis more deeply, including how their lateral curves contribute to rotation of their vertebrae. The group explored alignments and helped each other see asymmetries until everyone in the group could identify their curve pattern.

Students created self portraits and presented these to the group. A favorite was the portrait which depicted the spine in hearts (image by Nanso Cleaver). The work of expanding love for our curvy spines was encouraged by Nanso’s art.

Through padding, props, breathing practices, deep relaxation, practices for lengthening, and heartfelt community of support, the flow-ers softened into a more relaxed state of being.

The final sessions of the program were TriYoga Therapeutics for Scoliosis. With their newly gained knowledge, each student was able to refine the Asanas to create better balance within their scoliosis. The students were full of gratitude for new understandings and discovering ways to ease their pain. The gift of the Scoliosis Wellness Journey was summed up as the last student headed out the door. "Thank you. I feel better already."
